Etymology of "M" and "B" bulb and "X". The "M" in M-sync was used to indicate magnesium, which, at the time, was the filament used in flash bulbs. The "B" bulb refers to the rubber pneumatic bulb used to hold a shutter open and then close. The "X" in X-sync refers to the xenon gas used in an electronic flash.
