Canon 7 with 50mm f0

A canon model 7 with the 50mm f/0.95 lens attached

The Canon 7 (also referred to as the Canon Model 7) is a 35mm Film rangefinder manufactured from September 1961 to early 1965 by Canon. It took the M39 screw mount and was designed to also accept a special bayonet mount for the 50mm 0.95 lens.

The main concept for its design was the need for a fast rangefinder camera with the target audience of the press. However it never was a huge success at the time of release due to competition in the rangefinder sector from Leica with the M3 and the releases of some of the first single lens reflex cameras. In recent years however, the camera has seen a significant amount of popularity due to its compatibility with the canon 50mm f/0.95 lens.

Features

  • 0.80x magnification viewfinder with switchable frame lines (35mm,50mm,85mm,100mm and 135mm)
  • Selenium cell light meter
  • ISO range from 6 to 400
  • Stainless steel shutter with speeds from 1 second to 1/1000 sec and bulb mode
  • Pc connector for external flash.

Design

The canon model 7 is fairly bulky for a rangefinder and weighs 875g with the 50mm 0.95 lens attached, the film advance leader is on the left side of the camera and allows for the film to be advanced in either one go or a series of smaller pushes. The camera does allow for double exposures. To do so you must take your first photo and set the mode to rewind (The switch for this is located to the left of the advance leader with the shutter button on it.) You must then turn the rewind lever (located on the left of the camera) approximately 2 and a half times. Then push the advance lever all the way and take the 2nd exposure.

The shutter speed selector is located to the left of the shutter release button and also displays the ASA and ISO settings. To change the ISO setting press the small button located beneath it on the back of the camera and turn the wheel until it displays your desired speed.
